Words of Hope – Devoted to Prayer

After Jesus died and then rose from the grave, He left His people, His Church to continue the mission of reuniting lost people with God. How were they able to do this? Luke tells us that one of the distinguishing characteristics of the early Christian church was that they “devoted themselves to prayer” (Acts 1:14, 2:42). Certainly, they each had their own individual prayer lives, but as they gathered together they prayed with each other. This is not an insignificant detail and it should be our mode as we continue the same mission today. It is no coincidence when Jesus modelled prayer He chose the words “Our Father” not “My Father”.  He taught His disciples to pray collectively remembering their common status as God’s children.  There is a bond of unity experienced when we pray with one another. Who do you pray with? Who can you invite to join you as you devote yourself to prayer? Don’t just offer to pray for someone, offer to pray with them and experience God in your midst!
