An American author by the name of Christian Bovee once said, “False friends are like a shadow, keeping close to us while we walk in the sunshine, but leaving us when we cross into the shade.” He couldn’t have said it any better. There’s nothing worse than having people in our lives pretending to be our friends. When we’re on top of the mountain and that things are going well, they’re always by our side making us think that they care. But as soon as we’re in the valley of shadows, they are no where to be found. There’s nothing worse than fake friends.
I sometimes wonder what Jesus felt when Judas betrayed him to the authorities for only 30 pieces of silver. I wonder how He felt when Peter denied Him and when all of the other disciples deserted Him as he was captured by the Romans. Oh, it’s a bad day when our friends become invisible while we face hardships. It’s a bad day when some of our friends are more interested in setting us up for failure rather than success. It’s important to be careful with the people we allow in our inner circles because not everyone will have our best interests at hand.
A true friend, according to the Bible, is someone who loves at all times and who sticks closer than a brother or a sister. In other words, a true friend is someone who is going to be there when the joyous moments of this life won’t.
