Work of Art

Pr. Rhoda Klein Miller

Do you have a favorite work of art? What about it warrants your attention and appreciation?

Art is a form of human expression that encompasses a wide range of creative activities, creations, and visual or auditory representations. It serves as a means for individuals to convey ideas, emotions, experiences, and aesthetics to an audience.

Are human beings a work of art? According to the Bible you are. In Genesis we read humanity was the pièce de résistance of Earth’s creation. We were not merely thought or spoken into existence. The Creator handcrafted and formed our bodies from the raw dirt and infused us with life through a kiss. “We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago (Ephesians 2:10).  A masterpiece is beautiful, powerful, intentional and treasured.

But then sin entered our world and we became tarnished, guilty, dirty, ugly, jealous, and angry. The masterpiece was defaced but not destroyed or devalued. Satan tried to devestate the heart of the Maker but a true Artist can remake beauty from ashes.

Did you hear about the Banksy painting that shredded itself seconds after the winning bid of 1.4 million was made? Initially the audience gasped in despair however the cut up version later sold for $25.4 million.  What establishes an artwork’s worth? The amount someone is willing to pay for it. This is the amazing evidence of our value to God, Jesus paid a great price, giving up all His power and heavenly home to purchase our lives back from the grip of eternal death. Remind yourself of this by reading John 3:16, 1 Corinthians 6:19, Romans 5:8.
