God’s personal invitation

God’s personal invitation

Why bother praying if God knows everything already? If prayer’s purpose was to inform God this is a fair question. Many people misunderstand the purpose and power of prayer as it connects us with our Creator. Conversations with God; do you have them? Or does your experience of reading Scripture and praying feel one-sided?  At the end of his celebrated career, American diplomat Max Kampleman shared this gem of wisdom: “A dialogue is more than two monologues.” As with building any relationship, open and honest communication is essential. A rich exchange leads to change in our hearts, minds and actions.

Here are some strategies for a discourse with God. Try reading a Bible text slowly, repeatedly and prayerfully, asking the Holy Spirit to guide your understanding and identify God’s personal invitation. Tell Jesus what you find challenging or inspiring about His Word. Choose a song of worship where the lyrics are directed to God then when it ends pause and listen for His response. Write God a letter or draw Him a picture. Nurture your desire to speak with God, not merely at Him. Prayer becomes more meaningful when we participate in both sides of the communication flow.  It’s a critical conversation I hope you’ll be part of.
