Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year

By Rhoda Klein Miller

During the Lunar New Year it is a common tradition in asian communities to give red packets containing money. Some ancient folklore suggests these gifts were to ward off evil spirits and bring a blessing to the recipient.

As Christians we know of something more powerful than money that overcomes demons and ensures a glorious future – Jesus, the Word of God!  With that in mind creative and clever churches are joining the corporate world in designing custom envelopes to hand out over the holiday but these include blessings from the Bible.

One church communication manager explained: “We are blessed because Jesus loves us. And we hope that the red packets may brighten someone’s day knowing that they are loved by God.” Church members use them as an appropriate and non-threatening way to bless those outside the community of believers. The verse acts as a conversation starter about the different ways God blesses His people.

As OAC celebrates with those who recognize the Lunar New Year, consider sharing a red envelope containing one of these beautiful texts that offer a treasure beyond what money can buy!

Rom 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.

Philip. 4:7 The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
