THE ULTIMATE ALLEGIANCE

In moments of political change and uncertainty it’s natural to feel anxious about the direction of our world. As Christians, however, we are reminded that our security is not set by any senate but rather the Saviour. We aim to better our communities despite whether policies are in our favour or not, for our ultimate allegiance is to Jesus. We apply His ethics and standards of good neighbourliness regardless of who is ruling the country or city we reside in.

No matter how unstable the world may seem, God reigns overall and anchors our future in His eternal kingdom. Leaders come and go, parliments shift, nations rise and fall, but none of that should affect our place in Heaven. Hebrews 12:28 reminds us, “Therefore, let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken.”

Some misread Daniel 2:21 in which the prophet declares God “removes kings and sets up kings.” That doesn’t mean every king is endorsed by God as good. Sometimes bad rulers are permitted to seize power so we are confronted with the consequences of corruption to awaken a longing for true justice and benevolence.
When politics weigh heavy on our hearts, Philippians 3:20 offers comfort: “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” Earthly governments are temporary. As citizens of heaven we represent the kingdom (or kin-dom) of God and our mission is to advance His platform of love, grace, and peace.

When worried thoughts start to dominate your mind, redirect your energy to how you can make a difference. Pray for leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Be a peacemaker (Matthew 5:9). Share the Good News (Philippians 4:7). Our peace today and bright hope for tomorrow is not found in the promises of presidents, prime ministers or policies, but in the One who reigns forever. Take heart, for the King of Kings is coming soon to end all sorrow and strife.
