Happy Rebirthday to Whitney and Constantine who have chosen to be baptized! We tend to have big celebrations on the anniversary marking our physical birth day but even more significant is the celebration of what Jesus described as being born again (John 3:4-6). Based on the average life expectancy you may only celebrate 73 birthdays but when you are born again into God’s kin-dom and family, you will be celebrating your rebirthday for eternity!
The conversation John’s gospel records between Nicodemus and Jesus is not the only reference to spiritual birth. John echoes Genesis in his opening statement “in the beginning was the Word … and through Him all things were made.” In Genesis 1, God brings life and order out of chaos, transforming darkness into light, filling the void with vibrant life. In the same way, baptism marks finding purpose, identity and fulfillment through new life with Christ.
The presence of the triune God is noted at Creation “let us make humankind in our image” (Gen 1:26) and all three, Voice, Spirit, Son are represented at Jesus’ baptism (John 1:32-34) further emphasizing this recreation moment. Just as Jesus called out land and life from the watery chaos, He invites us to be transformed by His grace by surrendering the self-made identity and leaving our brokenness behind.
Jesus said “I came that you might have life to the fullest” (John 10:10). I hope and pray we all discover what it’s like to be really living in the light of His mercy and love.
