MORE THAN INFORMATION

In 2022, Google engineer Blake Lemoine made global headlines after claiming an artificial intelligence system called LaMDA had become sentient. Millions laughed. Millions more wondered: What if it really is conscious? The AI spoke about fear, rights, and the desire to be understood. It clearly had mastered language and could imitate emotion but when it said “I love you” its message felt flat.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly sophisticated, we face an unexpected conundrum: are we becoming less human the more machines evolve?

What distinguishes human intelligence from clever coding? What sets our creativity apart when AI can generate songs, poetry and even animate a short story? What gives us our worth in an age fixated on processing power and usefulness?

The Bible offers a profound starting point: “So God created humanity in Their own image” (Genesis 1:27, NIV). Our value begins with whose image we bear. And Scripture reveals just how precious we are to God: “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, NIV). Our worth isn’t a measure of our performance. It is a determined by the lengths God goes to rescue us.

Perhaps the rise of AI is revealing something important: humanity is more than information processing. We are created for relationship, capable of love, and called to reflect the character of our Creator.
