I was at the Vancouver Art Gallery last week to see the Alberto Giacometti exhibition. His sculptures are the product of remarkable talent and obsession with his craft. But the real showstoppers for me, in some way upstaging his work, were the sources of his inspiration also displayed. From behind their glass enclosures, tiny stoic figures and blank faces carved in marble projected a strong and arresting presence. These carvings from the ancient Cycladic culture were made 3,000-5,000 years ago by artists dwelling around the Mediterranean Sea. Picasso referred to them as ”magical objects.” They are among the most highly prized ancient artifacts, some being sold for 1 to 2 million dollars. It got me thinking how I take for granted the ancient words of beauty, wisdom, and power readily at my fingertips. I don’t need to go to a museum or gallery to access them. Even without my paper copy or phone I can carry them in my heart and mind and they give me strength, peace and hope. What will you do with these ancient words of life?
