In Genesis 1, we find God in the dark. This space, if we can even call it space, is described by the poet with the Hebrew phrase, Tohu va vohu – and those words describe a state of confusion, chaos, void, and emptiness. It’s not the place we think of that can generate light, life, or purpose.
