Words of Hope – Volunteering

By Pastor Rhoda Klein Miller

Elbows bumping, shoulders rubbing, arms crossing as fingers were gripping the same potato! This was the awkward dance of volunteers this week who came together to package bulk produce for distribution to those in need. In another corner of the warehouse a similar process was happening but with the occasional stepping and slipping on green beans. We worked alongside some we never met before but after two hours we were parting comrades, all in agreement stay a little longer till the job was done.  I hadn’t felt like going that night but I had offered others a ride; accountability increases follow-through! Afterward I realized it was the best part of my day. What sense of community and accomplishment might you be missing out on?  What unexpected joy and gratitude is lost without the needed shift in perspective when you serve?  “Don’t walk away from someone who needs help; your hand is God’s hand for that person.”
