Spiritual Soda

Spiritual Soda

By Rhoda Klein Miller

Do you call it soda or pop? Answer our poll! I remember the puzzled look on the Lufthansa attendant’s face when I asked what kind of ‘pop’ they had on my flight to Germany. Thankfully she understood “ginger ale” so my troubled tummy found some relief.

Regardless of what you call it, effervescent beverages offer an extra level of refreshment I instinctively crave on warm summer days. Turns out there is some scientific support for why seltzer drinks are more satisfying. Beyond the multisensory enjoyment of the bubbles, the CO2 activates our sour-sense taste receptors. All other mammals offered soda water will avoid it due to their perception of the acidity as dangerous. However for humans, the sharp bite from carbon dioxide offers a cooling sensation.

What is your ‘spiritual soda’? When life feels dry, flat, or fatigued from the grind of daily pressures, where do you find the ‘pick me up’ for your soul? The Enemy presents lots of options, deceptively sweet but the more we drink, the thirstier we get. But Jesus provides “a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:13-14, Rev. 7:17). He is the ultimate Thirst-quencher! We come to His well by prayer, listening to His Word, enjoying creation and weekly sabbathing. These are trying times; its normal to feel exhausted and parched by grief and uncertainty. However that doesn’t mean your only outcome is to fizzle out. Drink deeply from the joy laden messages of hope, love and salvation Jesus is offering you.
