Set Free

Set Free

By Ryan Brousson

Can you imagine what the Israelites were feeling when they were in Egypt as slaves? I find it hard to imagine, living in our modern, western world where we are “free” and generally prosperous. Yet, we are in a similar situation to Israel in Egypt.

We can get a sense of how Israel felt when we remember our own condition, we may not be in physical slavery, but we are slaves to sin (John 8:34). Thankfully we have a God who is in the business of setting His people free. He came down and worked to set Israel free from Egypt. He brought signs and plagues on Egypt to try to convince Pharaoh and his people to let them go. To begin with, Pharaoh thought he could control the situation and keep Israel, but God had other plans for His people, and He has other plans for us as well.

God died for us so that “our old self [is] crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin” (Rom. 6:6). Like the Israelites, we are set free from our slavery to sin and self and made free in Christ. The Pharaohs in our lives no longer have dominion over us.

We are free to live for the One who has given us freedom and a new life.
