A Serving Character

A Serving Character

By Ryan Brousson

What did Christ do while He was on our planet? You could say many things: healing people, preaching, walking on water. What do these things have in common? They are acts of sacrifice and generosity, acts of giving.

Christ gave of Himself, even to the point of death. He did not think of Himself, but even when He was tired and sad, He cared for those in need. He is our example. He says, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me” (Luke 9:23). This can apply to trials, but it also means we are to serve as He served.

Philippians 2:3-7 says similar: we are to mirror Christ, who became a servant, not putting Himself above those in need. He regarded others as more important than Himself. This is love, that we serve and sacrifice for others, it is an action word, even those who may not deserve it. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died [and served] for us” (Rom. 5:8). Let us continually surrender our lives to Christ so that we may have more fully every day His selfless, giving, and serving character.
