Back to School

Back to School

By Rhoda Klein Miller

It’s back to school season for a lot of educators, children, youth and young adults but for a select group this week marked their first day of school ever! Do you remember your first day? Were you excited or terrified? This is one of the most entertaining times of the year to scroll through social media feeds to see the photos posted of these milestone moments. Honestly my favourites are the grumpy kids who hold signs announcing their personal statistics as if they are rehearsing for a police station mugshot. With my office overlooking a daycare it’s common to witness the blood-curdling screams of a preschooler separated from their parent for the first time.  I was proud of this one adult calmly reassuring their young child they would have lots of fun, make friends and learn new things, before turning to leave. Things quieted down and cheerful laughter filled the outdoor play area until the end of the day when I recognized the volume of the same defiant little voice swell again. This time it was because they didn’t want to leave! When life’s challenges tempt you to abandon trust in your Heavenly Father, remember some difficulties are for our own good – they help us grow up! (Is 48:17)
