Standing With Our Indigenous Neighbours

Standing With Our Indigenous Neighbours

By Edwin Darius

The National Inquiry of Missing and Murdered Women and Girls that started in 2016, has just ended a few days ago. Based on the inquiry, Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other groups in Canada. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, around 1,200 of both Indigenous women and girls have been killed or have gone missing from 1980 to 2012. It’s a heartbreaking situation that many of our Indigenous neighbours are dealing with and I cannot imagine the amount of pain they are going through.
One of the Bible promises in Psalms 34:18 says “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart. And He saves those who are broken in spirit.”(NLV) I am certain that God holds each family member of the victims close to His heart. I know that He is in the process of comforting the communities and healing the wounds of those that are affected. As for us, we are to stand with them no matter what and help them carry their burdens as it says in Galatians 6:2. Our voice is needed! We have to speak out against violence against Indigenous women. We have to spread awareness in order to let others know and to initiate change. Let us pray for the healing and protection of our Indigenous neighbours.  May God nurture all the women and girls who are still missing.
