Real Connection

Real Connection

By Robert Bestwick

“What is something you must have every morning to find the energy for the rest of your day?” “Coffee!!” was my spontaneous and honest response to my pastor’s question, though the answer would not surprise her. There was a silent pause as if she was waiting for me to rethink it and answer correctly. Seconds passed before she made a suggestion; “what about prayer?”

This short but deep dialogue got me thinking about how much attention I give to prayer, and even more importantly, how much time I devote to other activities instead of prayer. It is estimated that an average user will spend 5.4 years of their lifetime scrolling social media, and I’m more than an average user. The last notification on my phone calculated I was averaging 3 hours of screen time daily last week! But how much time was I spending in prayer? There was no app tracking that but I knew the stats would be much lower.

As I reflected on that I realized prayer is the most powerful social media platform where we can do more than just communicate and share. God is always available with instant feedback. He gives us a thumbs up on any life that seeks His love and guidance. Jeremiah 29:12-13 tells us; “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” So, one of my resolutions for this year is to spend more time in prayer and a bit less online. God is asking us today, “What’s on your mind?” and all we need to do is bow our head to connect.
